Dedeté 2008 Graphic Humor Contest Announced

Image
It is critical to create a consciousness about ecological phenomena affecting the planet. Likewise, powers and governments such as that of the United States are promoting the use of the bio-fuels for political ends, without considering the social consequences. These effects, taking the form of natural disasters, are producing global warming to such a degree that "climatic change" has prompted the newspaper to convene the International Biennial Dedeté 2008 .   Title: Give the Planet a Chance!   Requirements of the Biennial: The contest is open to all the caricaturists/cartoonists, designers and graphic artists of the world who carry out their works within the sphere of graphic humor. These can be produced using any technique, but should be sent only by electronic mail to the address: dedetecontest@jrebelde.cip.cu .   The works must be previously unpublished and fulfill the following technical regulations: format A4 (21 cm x 29.7 cm), resolution: 300 dpi, image type...

Politics 'Stifling $100 laptop'

Image
By Jonathan Fildes Science and technology reporter, BBC News   A lack of "big thinking" by politicians has stifled a scheme to distribute laptops to children in the developing world, a spokesman has said.     Walter Bender of One Laptop per Child (OLPC) said politicians were unwilling to commit because "change equals risk".   But, he said, there needed to be a "dramatic change" because education in many countries was "failing" children.   In an interview with the BBC, Nigeria's education minister questioned the need for laptops in poorly equipped schools.   Dr Igwe Aja-Nwachuku said:   "What is the essence of introducing One Laptop per Child when they don't have seats to sit down and learn; when they don't have uniforms to go to school in, where they don't have facilities?"   "We are more interested in laying a very solid foundation for quality education which will be efficient, effective, accessib...

Quote From President Reagan's Diary

Image
President Reagan referencing doing a favor for the first President Bush before he was the first President Bush . . .     Historical Quote of the Day   "A moment I've been dreading. George brought his ne'er-do-well son around this morning and asked me to find the kid a job. Not the political one who lives in Florida. The one who hangs around here all the time looking shiftless. This so-called kid is already almost 40 and has never had a real job. Maybe I'll call Kinsley over at The New Republic and see if they'll hire him as a contributing editor or something. That looks like easy work."   -- Ronald Reagan in his recently published diaries, May 17, 1986.   Thanks to Steve at DesertPeace .

Dr. Seuss WW2 Cartoons

Image
Dr. Seuss Goes to War: The World War II Editorial Cartoons of Theodor Seuss Geisel by Richard H. Minear, Art Spiegelman Read more about this title...   This is an interesting book that presents the best of Dr. Seuss'  (Theodor Seuss Geisel) World War 2 cartoons. Some use stereotypical depictions of the Japanese that was common during that time. Still, this book is a glimpse of a little remembered era of Dr. Seuss' career.

End The Healthcare Crisis In Gaza! Sign This Petition

Target: United Nations Human Rights Committee and Israeli government   Created by: Save Gaza Campaign   END THE HEALTH CRISIS IN GAZA   Since Israeli government declared Gaza as "hostile entity" on 19th September 2007, Israel blocks delivery of essential medicines to Gaza Strip and doesn't allow Palestinian patients to go outside of Gaza for urgent treatment.   The United Nations, The World Health Organization and Physicians for Human Rights have condemned Israel for this situation , but Israeli government is still continue to its policy and Palestinian patients are slowly dying in front of the world.   All the victims of this humanitarian crisis are innocent civilians, and many of them are children. For example in 14th November 2007, 6 months old Palestinian baby Sina al-Hajj died because Israeli government didn't allow her to cross Gaza border for getting treatment.   Palestinian MP Jamal Al Khudari said now there are more than a thousand Pales...

A little Nostalgia

No real reason to post these other than I just love Joe Cocker. There will never be another like him. It's amazing that he is still going strong at 62.   Since I'm posting videos, I may as well pop in what is probably my favorite song from the 60's, For What It's Worth by Buffalo Springfield. Here are two videos from the days when the song was just released. The first is a canned, studio version and the second is "live" from the Monterey Festival 1967. Sadly, this song is even more relevant 40 years later.     (The intro is by Peter Tork of The Monkees!)

Sad Excuse For "Creativity"

Image
Aquadots , another crap toy claiming to be creative has been recalled because the coating on the "beads," when ingested, form the GHB compound. This is toxic to young children, and in higher dosages, adults. This is just one more product that suffers the "production at lowest cost" syndrome that is standard operating for big business these days. Lowest cost only includes actual monetary cost. Safety, cost to workers and other factors are not considered. This is what happens when products are produced in sweat shop type factories by barely paid and abused workers. Even though China claims to be Communist, it is just another in the long line of State Capitalist governments pissing on Marxist ideology. Capitalists love slave laborers no matter what flag they reside under.   The toy itself is junk. It is marketed as a toy for four years old and above but there are many "parents" who seem to think it is appropriate for it to be around toddlers, who will put a...

Kucinich Will Introduce Privileged Resolution To Force Up Or Down Vote On Cheney Impeachment

WASHINGTON - November 2 - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) announced today that he will be offering a privileged resolution on the House floor next week that will bring articles of impeachment against the Vice President, Richard B. Cheney.   “The momentum is building for impeachment,” Kucinich said. “Millions of citizens across the nation are demanding Congress rein in the Vice President’s abuse of power.   “Despite this groundswell of opposition to the unconstitutional conduct of office, Vice President Cheney continues to violate the U.S. Constitution by insisting the power of the executive branch is supreme.   “Congress must hold the Vice President accountable. The American people need to let Members of Congress know how they feel about this. The Vice President continues to use his office to advocate for a continued occupation of Iraq and prod our nation into a belligerent stance against Iran. If the Vice President is successful, his actions will ensure decades...

Desiree Anita Ali-Fairooz And Condi Rice Video

Notice how the Capital Hill Gestapo hauls out the rest of Code Pink after the initial incident. I guess the committee didn't want their pleasant little social gathering to be disrupted by trivial things like the Iraq War.

OK Bush, Which Is It?

Our Simpleton-In-Chief, speaking to an adoring Fascist crowd at the cretinous Heritage Foundation made this ridiculous statement :   "When it comes to funding our troops, some in Washington should spend more time responding to the warnings of terrorists like Osama bin Laden and the requests of our commanders on the ground, and less time responding to the demands of MoveOn.org bloggers and Code Pink protesters ."   By watching the video of the event (if one can stomach "Old Smirky"), this inanity is greeted with thunderous applause. ( video available at the White House link )   But he babbled these responses to questions back in March 2002   Q. Mr. President, in your speeches now you rarely talk or mention Osama bin Laden. Why is that? Also, can you tell the American people if you have any more information, if you know if he is dead or alive? Final part -- deep in your heart, don't you truly believe that until you find out if he is dead or alive, you w...

Jailed Rice Protester Surprised By Dearth Of Security At Hearing

Image
Published on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 by The Hill by Karissa Marcum An Iraq war protester who got within inches of Condoleezza Rice at a hearing last week said she was shocked that tighter security did not prevent her from coming so close to the secretary of state.   If there had been more security at the House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, protester Desiree Anita Ali-Fairooz said, she probably wouldn’t have approached Rice. “I anticipated that she would have been surrounded by SS [Secret Service] or by private security,” she said.   Photos from the hearing show Ali-Fairooz sticking her hands, which had been soaked in fake blood, in the face of a startled Rice. She then screamed that the blood “of millions of Iraqis” was on the hands of the administration.   Ali-Fairooz, a member of Code Pink who has been arrested four times in the last seven months, was charged with disorderly conduct, defacing of government property and assault on a federal officer. ...
