Until information about the forthcoming film The Golden Compass came out, I was not familiar with Philip Pullman's novels. Thanks to the standard issue Christian boycott hysteria and misinformation campaign, I have become intrigued by the stories and intend on reading the books and more than likely, seeing the film. Organized religion has done more to turn people away than any book, I must say. While it is impossible to answer the question of God, it is possible to say declaratively that organized religion has been a detriment to Mankind. How much oppression, death, torture and destruction caused by Man in God's name do we need to witness before all sane people reject this madness?   As usual, the Christian freak-out over a new film will do nothing but drive audiences to it. I don’t know how I missed this back in November but, apparently, the Washington DC City Paper did an “exposé” of the clandestine meetings of the Frederick Douglas Club of the CPUSA at the NEA cafeteria. I haven’t been able to read the entire article but the short excerpts are hilarious. I guess the great patriot Bob Novak picked up on it and made reference to the meetings as an obvious attempt to red bait the NEA. According to the NEA , their cafeteria is open to the public and is not screened. Since the right of free assembly is one of those pesky constitutional rights, Novak found it all rather nefarious. As I tracked the flow of the story around the Internet, the news seemed to appear on mostly wingnut and homes school blogs. The wingnuts found it all proof that the evil commies were secretly still planning to interrupt their lifestyle of greed and selfishness. My favorite newspaper comic strip is Mutts . I love the "old time" style Patrick McDonnell uses. He also authored a great book about George Herriman, the cartoonist who scratched out the great Krazy Kat in immortal ink. Anywho, "The Gift Of Nothing" started as an idea last year, as I recall, and this year McDonnell has released a cute, little book illustrating the story. I put this one up there with Shel Silverstein s' "The Giving Tree". Now, both of those are worth giving this holiday.

Much has been written about the death of Rosa Parks . I am finding amusing material by Right-Wing fanatics who are making much about her (possible) Communist Party affiliations. I have no idea if she was actually a member. It doesn't matter. It shouldn't be a surprise since the CPUSA was at the front of the push for equal rights. This seems to surprise the Righties. Well, they aren't big into the civil rights thing anyway. That evil subject is left to us radicals. Seoul Train I am of the opinion that, just as law enforcement people should be held to a higher standard, so should governments claiming to be Communist. North Korea is a vile excuse for a people's state. This is not Socialism, Marxism or Communism. It is a disgusting dictatorship ruled by a megalomaniac who deserves to be strung up from the nearest tree. Let the suffering citizens of North Korea beat this pig until the flesh falls from his bones. If you have an opportunity to see the film "Seoul Train" do so. If not, I suggest joining the new independent film club, " Ironweed Flms ." It will be one of the DVD's offered in the coming months. I see that Frederic Back's "The Man Who Planted Trees" is to be offered soon also. This is a must have. I think it's one of the most beautiful animated films ever made.
